Neon Lights
Last week I was, unusually, out and about at night and had ventured to a bar called The Boulevard in Costa Mesa with my mom. Having been driving around the block unable to find its location at first, suddenly as we turned into the back alley of parking spaces, a glow of red letters invited us closer and drew us in like insects. As we had been lost in the dark and unfamiliar back ends of stores and restaurants, this beacon led us to our desired destination. Consumed around by the cold dark atmosphere, I found the signs potency from the neon as well as the minimalist aesthetic of the simple cursive and line usage. Without the ability to blend or really have many dynamics to the design quality, I enjoy how the bright simple lines demand so much attention and power. Additionally, I found it interesting to observe the lights at different distances and analyze the effects found in the color of the lights, usually baring more white light in the center and color glowing around. I would be intrigued to experiment with the use of neon lights to compliment the concepts of contemporary dance in a formalist way to focus more on the compositions used. I find these lights to be profound and unique which I feel emphasizes these components in dance.
