Greetings from Newport Beach,
Hey guys it’s Sean and today I will be writing about my recent move-in on Monday to my very first apartment!
First of all I’d like everyone to know that it’s a pleasure to be in this class and I’m super excited to learn about electric and lighting. A little background history about me is that I do have an AA and certified in interior design and decorating that I got at my community college. So I do know a little bit about lighting I just don’t know much about the electrical work inside the walls. I did however know about the 6 foot rule for the outlets around the house and the bathroom and kitchen outlets that have the “reset” button.
Upon moving to my apartment I didn’t really know what to expect with the outlets, but once I move in, I immediately saw that every wall had an outlet and was evenly spaced 6 feet apart. Which is great, but I did notice that some were “shocky”. So today I am having a guy from maintenance come up and test all the outlets just to make sure they are safe.
One thing I really found interesting about this classes that we talked about the wattage and voltage of certain outlets and what they can take and what their limit is, and I really never even thought as a designer about that issue. Normally, we just say “ put this light in that corner, put this light on the table, and put and put this light in that corner” not even thinking about if I’m going to overdo it with the outlets. So I’m glad I learned that and now upon decorating my apartment I am very cautious of what I’m plugging into the walls.
Another thing about these apartments, is that the lights that came with the apartment I personally cannot touch because they are screwed into the fixture meaning I cannot tamper with the light bulb itself. The only reason why I would want to do that is if I wanted to change the softness or the color of the light. Because it’s funny that my kitchen has a white fluorescent light but right next to the dining room is a soft yellow light that I personally think clash.
Here’s some pictures to see what I’m talking about.
Peace out!
